How to export your Amazon DynamoDB data

Last checked 28 September 2026

Answer

Point in time recovery has to be on for the table first, or the request fails with PointInTimeRecoveryUnavailableException. In the DynamoDB console choose Exports to S3 in the left navigation pane, click Export to S3, pick the source table and destination bucket, choose Full export or Incremental export, pick the point in time (or Current time), and set Exported file format to DynamoDB JSON or Amazon Ion, then choose Export. The caller needs dynamodb:ExportTableToPointInTime on the table plus s3:AbortMultipartUpload, s3:PutObject and s3:PutObjectAcl on the bucket, and must be in the same account as the table. Exports run asynchronously, consume no read capacity units, and carry no completion time guarantee. An incremental export period must be at least 15 minutes and no more than 24 hours. Export job records stay listed for 90 days; the objects written to S3 stay until the bucket policy removes them.

What it holds

Table items, each a set of attributes, with their local and global secondary indexes.

Find the size

DescribeTable returns TableSizeBytes, the total size of the table in bytes, and ItemCount, the number of items, and the same two figures show on the table in the console. DynamoDB updates both approximately every six hours, so recent writes may not be in them. Index sizes come back the same way per index as IndexSizeBytes and ItemCount.
