Should you give an AI buyer exclusive rights?
Default to non-exclusive. A sale prices a growing asset once, at its smallest. A non-exclusive licence lets the same records be licensed again as they grow.
What non-exclusive means here
You give a buyer the right to train on a copy. You keep ownership, you keep the originals, you keep using them in your own business, and you keep the right to license them to somebody else tomorrow. Nothing is taken off the table.
What exclusivity actually is
A period during which no other buyer may license that material. It is worth real money to a buyer and it is priced as its own line, separately from everything else, with the months and the figure written down before you agree. Your right to license elsewhere comes back automatically on the end date, with no notice and no further payment.
When exclusivity is the right answer
When the premium a buyer pays for it beats what the same records would earn licensed two or three times over the same period, and when the archive is finished rather than growing. A wound down business is the clean case. A trading company whose record gets bigger every quarter usually is not.
